House of Representatives on September 26, 1983, about the dangers of computer hacking, and six bills concerning computer crime were introduced in the House that year. Pressured by media coverage, congressman Dan Glickman called for an investigation and began work on new laws against computer hacking. The Newsweek article appears to be the first use of the word hacker by the mainstream media in the pejorative sense. The case quickly grew media attention, and 17-year-old Neal Patrick emerged as the spokesman for the gang, including a cover story in Newsweek entitled "Beware: Hackers at play", with Patrick's photograph on the cover. This concern became real when, in the same year, a gang of teenage hackers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, known as The 414s, broke into computer systems throughout the United States and Canada, including those of Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Security Pacific Bank. However, the release of the film WarGames that year, featuring a computer intrusion into NORAD, raised the public belief that computer security hackers (especially teenagers) could be a threat to national security. ![]() By 1983, hacking in the sense of breaking computer security had already been in use as computer jargon, but there was no public awareness about such activities. In the 1982 film Tron, Kevin Flynn ( Jeff Bridges) describes his intentions to break into ENCOM's computer system, saying "I've been doing a little hacking here". It was an excerpt from a Stanford Bulletin Board discussion on the addictive nature of computer use. In 1980, an article in the August issue of Psychology Today (with commentary by Philip Zimbardo) used the term "hacker" in its title: "The Hacker Papers". It is implicated with 2600: The Hacker Quarterly and the alt.2600 newsgroup. It initially developed in the context of phreaking during the 1960s and the microcomputer BBS scene of the 1980s. The subculture around such hackers is termed network hacker subculture, hacker scene, or computer underground. Bruce Sterling, author of The Hacker Crackdown Birth of subculture and entering mainstream: 1960's-1980's ![]() Multiple PersonalityĮvery member of the Phantom Thieves has their own set of abilities thanks to their Persona, a spirit-like being that’s a manifestation of their rebellious nature. The deeper your bonds, the stronger you become. ![]() Beyond the battles through dark dungeons, known as Palaces, you’ll also need to spend time with your party members. By adding a robust set of social simulation features, Persona games are more than just about levelling up your party through battle. More Than an RPGĪs a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series, Persona has always been a JRPG at heart, but with a twist. Through the new friends the MC makes, he will form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group aiming to used this alternate world to do good in a world filled with lies and corruption. It’s there where the veil of reality is lifted and a shadowy world influenced by human emotion is revealed. In an attempt to carry on with his life, his family sends him to Tokyo to live with the only person who will take him. Once again, you step into the shoes of the main character, a teenage boy who finds himself on the wrong side of a lawsuit after attempting to rescue a woman being molested. The Persona series is one of the most revered in the JRPG space and Persona 5 takes all to a whole new level. They just offer their own standalone moments throughout rather than a group effort that relies on all parties being present. Plus, that’s not to say that the characters are weak, far from it. The core narrative is gripping throughout the whole campaign meaning that even without character interaction, this game still has a lot to offer story-wise. However, in this title, it feels like quite the opposite. In past games in the series, with emphasis on Persona 4, the story always felt like it took a back seat, letting the characters and their relationships shine through. The game tailors to every possible playstyle and we have to say, we really enjoyed it. Additions to the system this time around include negotiation, a focus on ranged weapons, plus the ability to fuse personas together to create the best ally for battle. It’s a very complex system but it’s so intuitive that one rarely stops to notice. Then with regards to the combat, returning fans will feel right at home with a familiar turn-based style making a return. Not to mention, they are much bigger, meaning much more to explore. However, this time the developer has decided to hand make each area, each with its own unique aspects and puzzles which help to make each area feel fresh and interesting throughout the entire runtime of this game. Up until now, the series had relied on procedural generation to create environments and dungeons. When comparing to it’s most recent predecessor, Persona 5 handles level design a little differently. ![]() Domination events are definitely challenging. Earning awards also fills your power meter, so it's not uncommon to chain together a whole sequence of take-downs and destruction. These are mini-achievements that can be anything from drifting for a certain length of time or hitting a certain speed, to triggering events or fragging opponents in different ways. And then there are the 30-40 awards per course too. Not only is it kick-ass to drive through a courthouse, but you're rewarded for it. Not only is it cool to barge another car into oblivion, but you're rewarded for it. It's great stuff, and the points system ties neatly into the game's focus on spectacle. As you earn points in each district you unlock new races, and as you earn points (in any part of the game) you also earn XP and rank up, which unlocks new cars and components for the course editor. You'll get 15,000 points for coming first in a race, but for most of the Domination events that's less than half what you should wind up with. You get points for coming in the top three, you get points for fragging other cars, doing collateral damage, triggering events and earning awards. In fact, more than anything else, Unbounded is about points. Boosting is also used to frag other cars (although it's still possible to do take-downs without it), and pretty much everything you do comes with a reward. Just line yourself up and use your power meter for a sustained speed boost to crash through these targets. It might point out a tanker truck, just begging to be blown sky high, or a wall that you can crash through to take a short cut. Once you've filled your power meter – by drifting, drafting and catching air, the game starts highlighting targets on the course. It's+like+some+kind+of+metropolis+street+racer. Drifting sideways through a series of low walls as you cut a corner tight is ridiculously satisfying, with the brickwork practically exploding on impact, accompanied by chunky impactful sound effects. ![]() Low walls, concrete support beams, statues in the town square and kiosks can all be smashed straight through. The general rule of thumb? If it's smaller than your vehicle, chances are you can drive through it. ![]() The level of destructibility in Unbounded is hugely impressive, and definitely a step up from anything other racers have done. Domination races are about more than just finishing in the top three, they're also about taking down – or 'fragging' – other racers, doing collateral damage to the world around you, triggering explosive events and earning awards. Of all the race types on offer, Domination exemplifies this the most and is by far the highlight. Unbounded is at its best when the racing is combative, the action rough and tumble. Whether you're racing amongst the skyscrapers of City Center, through the construction sites of Tower Heights or along the derelict industrial streets of Old Town, it's all about city racing. The game's single player component is set within one city – Shatter Bay, so the environments are resolutely urban throughout. Bugbear has taken all its greatest strengths and honed them, creating its best racer yet. The handling is similarly weighty, the courses littered with destructible elements, the racing combative and the challenge just about pitch perfect. Unsurprisingly, Ridge Racer Unbounded shares a great deal of DNA with Bugbear's well-respected racing series FlatOut. No matter, judged on its own merits this is a great racing game. It is interesting, however, that Namco Bandai appears to have given Finnish developer Bugbear carte blanche to disregard pretty much everything that made Ridge Racer Ridge Racer. As much as I love Ridge Racer, the series has been steadily losing its relevance and vitality, so a kick in the pants was definitely in order. None of this is necessarily a bad thing, however. About the only thing you can depend on is a suitably ravey soundtrack, with a number of old Ridge Racer tracks, as well as the now obligatory dubstep. You can also forget about gleaming cities, winding mountain paths and beachside runs under an azure sky. As such, you can forget about ludicrously over-the-top powerslide mechanics. This game has about as much in common with Ridge Racer as Forza 4, or Hot Pursuit, or any other racer you'd care to name. Ridge Racer Unbounded is Ridge Racer in name only. Let's get it out of the way at the top of the show. ![]() ![]() Where do they hang out and how do they communicate? ![]()

![]() ![]() One scene that stands out is when Rochester threatens sexual violence when Jane announces she’s leaving him. ![]() I also appreciate the frank, unflinching way Brontë explored power dynamics in Jane and Rochester’s relationship, including the initial imbalance of power between them. It represents a bond that transcends the normal human experience, and I think it’s utterly beautiful. At fifteen, this kind of basis for love was foreign to me at almost twenty-eight, I’ve still never read another love story quite like it. Their relationship is based in intellect, in challenging each other to think differently and in talking about issues and philosophical ideas that matter to them. I’ll call it an understanding: At their cores, they understand each other in an almost mystical way. I especially love how Jane and Rochester develop feelings for each other not because of shallow physical attraction but because of a much deeper kind. It’s partly the restraint and tension that make it so intense, but I still marvel at how moving it is even to modern-day readers who aren’t used to the same censors on romantic and sexual content that Victorian readers were. Jane and Rochester’s relationship is powerful and intense from the start, and Brontë wrote it with a fiery passion woven into the words on the page. This is one reason the novel was so popular (and criticized by some) after it was published. In this way and others, the novel depicts romance quite differently from the Victorian norm. These things are eerie and beautiful they render the love story impossible to contain in earthly bonds. Jane and Rochester’s relationship contains elements of mysticism-from Rochester’s humorous impersonation of a fortune teller to the way Jane and Rochester, agonizing over losing each other, each hear the other’s voice calling to them during their separation. Andrew Lang’s fairy tale collections, Christina Rossetti’s poem “Goblin Market,” and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland are all products of the Victorian fascination with fantasy.īut the way Brontë portrays the fantastic elements goes deeper than surface level. ![]() This isn’t entirely unusual for a novel from the Victorian era: Victorians loved fairy tales. From the ghostly red room to Jane and Rochester’s eerie, moonlit meeting to Rochester’s frequent teasings that Jane is one of the fairy folk, fantasy is part of the everyday in Jane Eyre. One of the first things that struck me about the novel is the fantastical and gothic elements and how they’re included in the story. I love it for the characters and atmosphere- Jane’s fierce independence, her romance with Rochester, the gothic allure of Brontë’s writing-but also for the way those things have challenged me. I first read Jane Eyre when I was fifteen, and it’s remained my favorite novel since then. Though it’s over 150 years old, I still find something new and relevant in it each time. I read my favorite chapters when I’m lonely, consult it when I need advice, turn to it when I feel lost or need comfort. One of mine is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë-but I don’t just reread it, I revisit it like a friend. Booklovers all have stories we return to over and over again. |
